The original 37,000-sft school was constructed in 1987 to train a limited number of Vermont Guard and the 3rd Battalion of the 172nd Mountain Infantry in military mountaineering. This building flooded a number of times over the past several decades, requiring extensive renovations. The number of students grew and it became the home to mountaineering training for the U.S. Army, requiring a larger and more modern facility.
The new three-story 82,700-sft facility includes an indoor climbing wall, a dining area, and lodging. It will be heated in part by a geothermal system, with space for solar panels. The project is scheduled for completion in 2022.
